What is Tessera?

Tessera is a mobile block puzzle game currently being developed by EacTech. Players place shaped blocks onto a grid, clear full lines and areas, and try to keep the board open for as long as possible.

The name comes from tesserae, the small tiles that are fitted together to form a mosaic. In the same way, every game of Tessera is about fitting pieces into place: simple to learn in one move, but rewarding for players who think a few placements ahead.

Tessera is one of four products in the EacTech portfolio. It is in development and is not yet available to download.

Who is it for?

Tessera is designed for people who enjoy a calm, thoughtful puzzle and want a game that fits into a few spare minutes.

  • Casual puzzle players

People who want an easy-to-learn game they can pick up without a tutorial or a long commitment.

  • Strategic thinkers

Players who enjoy spatial reasoning and planning several moves ahead to keep the board under control.

  • Score chasers

Players who like to replay a game to beat their own best result and refine their placement strategy.

  • Short-break players

Anyone with a few minutes on a commute, in a queue or between tasks who wants a game that respects that time.

What problem does it solve?

Block puzzle games are easy to find but not always easy to enjoy. Many interrupt play with pop-ups between rounds, crowd the screen with visual noise, or add timers and pressure that turn a thoughtful puzzle into a rush.

That gets in the way of what makes a tile puzzle satisfying in the first place: looking at the board, choosing a spot and watching a line clear exactly as planned. Tessera aims to return the focus to the board, with a clean grid, readable pieces and decisions that reward thinking ahead.

Core product concept

Tessera is organized around four ideas that describe a single game, from the first piece to the final score.

  • Place

Choose where each piece goes on the grid. Placement is the core decision, and it should always feel direct and precise.

  • Clear

Complete lines and areas to clear them, freeing space and earning points for well-planned moves.

  • Plan

Read the upcoming pieces and leave room for them, so this placement does not block the next one.

  • Progress

Track improvement through scores, levels and milestones that make the next game worth starting.

Scope

Planned features

The core features below define Tessera's intended scope. They are being built now and may change before release.

  • Intuitive block placement

Drag a piece onto the grid and drop it where it fits, with a clear preview of where it will land before you let go.

  • Clear lines and areas

Fill a complete row, column or area of the board to clear it and open up space for the next pieces.

  • Plan ahead

The upcoming pieces are visible, so each placement can be chosen with the next few moves in mind.

  • Score chasing

Scoring is designed to reward planning, such as clearing several lines with a single placement, and every game ends with a score to beat.

  • Short sessions

Games are designed to last a few minutes and to be easy to pause, resume or restart.

  • Progression

Levels and milestones that track how a player improves over time, giving repeat play a sense of direction.

  • Clean visual identity

A mosaic-inspired look with readable pieces, a calm color palette and a board that stays easy to scan at a glance.

  • Replayable by design

Varied piece sequences mean no two games play out the same way, so the same simple rules keep producing new situations.

Later areas of exploration

Not committed. These areas are being considered for after the core experience is complete.

  • Daily puzzles

A fixed daily board or piece sequence that every player can attempt, for a shared challenge each day.

  • Additional board shapes

Alternative grid sizes and layouts that change how pieces fit and how far ahead a player needs to plan.

  • Visual themes

Optional color and tile sets inspired by mosaic patterns, changing the look without changing the rules.

  • Accessibility options

Settings such as color-blind-friendly palettes and reduced motion, so the board stays readable for more players.

Development philosophy

Clarity first. The board, the pieces and the score should be readable at a glance. Visual style supports the puzzle and never competes with it.

Depth from simple rules. Tessera is built on a small set of rules that anyone can learn in one game. Challenge comes from how pieces interact on the board, not from extra mechanics layered on top.

Respect short sessions. A game should start immediately, pause cleanly and resume where it left off, so a few spare minutes are always enough to play.

Calm, not rushed. Strategic block placement works best when players have time to think. Tessera is designed around considered decisions rather than reaction speed.

These principles are shared across all EacTech products. Read more about EacTech's approach to product development or the Build Note on What Makes a Good Casual Puzzle Game?.
